Thomas A. Macari took over as the volunteer head coach of the URI Hockey team in the fall of 1982. He continued to guide the team until early into the 1987-1988 season when illness forced him to curtail his coaching activities. Tom passed away on October 24, 1988. During his 5 year tenure as head coach, Tom compiled an overall record of 68-34-5 while leading the Rams to the Northeastern Collegiate Hockey Association Championship in 1982-1983 and again in 1985-1986. In addition to investing a great deal of time and energy in the development of URI's hockey program, Tom exemplified courage, dedication and the will to succeed. The coaching staff selects one person each season who personifies these same qualities and honors him as the newest recipient of the Thomas A. Macari Award.
